Service Notes
In this heartfelt and inspiring sermon, the Rev. Helen White reflects onJesus’ apocalyptic words in Luke and invites us to see them not as predictionsof doom, but as invitations to trust, endurance, and holy hope.
Drawing from her recent visit with Christ Church, Rev. White begins withthe beauty of the All Saints Cemetery Walk—an evening of candles, music, andremembrance that embodied resurrection hope. She then weaves together storiesfrom Scripture, her own family, and the Church’s life to illuminate how Godmeets us in seasons of upheaval.
Rev. White shares the moving journey of her beloved uncle Morris, whosepancreatic cancer became its own “personal apocalypse.” As his earthly templecrumbled, he discovered a deeper truth: “If you have love, you haveeverything.” Through his story, she shows how endurance, community, andlove carry us even when the world around us seems to fall apart.
She also reflects on the “apocalyptic” loss and stunning rebirth of Christ Church, Savannah, a congregation that endured division, litigation, andthe loss of its building—but through perseverance, forgiveness, and joy, grewinto a thriving parish shaped by young families, shared ministry, and deephope.
With tenderness and clarity, Rev. White encourages Christ Church,Frederica in its own season of discernment around ministries with youth andchildren, assuring the congregation that:
- God is faithful, even in seasons of uncertainty
- The Church’s calling is always to reach outward with love
- Endurance shapes our souls and forms communities of hope
- The gifts of this congregation are vibrant, real, and Spirit-led
In a world full of anxiety and change, we hear Jesus’ promise anew: “Byyour endurance you will gain your souls.” God’s love endures, God’s futureis trustworthy, and Christ Church is called into a dynamic and joyful nextchapter.
