Service Notes
On this First Sunday of Advent, Rev. Dr. Bob Brown invites us into a deeper understanding of the Christian year and the powerful rhythm of preparation, celebration, and response. While Advent often makes us think of angels, Mary, Joseph, and the coming Nativity, Scripture also reminds us of another profound truth: Advent comes twice.
Drawing on Matthew 24, Dr. Brown teaches that just as we prepare our hearts to celebrate Christ’s first coming in Bethlehem, we are also called to live alert, awake, and ready for Christ’s second coming—a return not only of the Judge, but of the Redeemer who already loves us, forgives us, and makes us worthy to stand before Him.
Through stories, Wesleyan liturgy, and reflections on grace, redemption, and holy living, this sermon illuminates what it means to prepare for both Advents:
- To remember the Incarnation, where Light broke into darkness and God came near in Jesus Christ.
- To live daily as the redeemed, loving God and neighbor wholeheartedly.
- To trust that the One who returns in glory is the same One who has already saved us by grace.
As we begin this sacred season, may we prepare not with fear, but with joyful expectation—living as people who shine Christ’s light into a world that desperately needs it.
“The Judge who is coming is also your Redeemer.” Thanks be to God.
