Bishop Charles

Bp. Charles was ordained in 1968 and has served as a rector in the dioceses of Los Angeles and Atlanta, a professor at the Episcopal Divinity School, and bishop of the Diocese of Pennsylvania. He holds degrees from Harvard, Claremont Graduate School, Union Theological Seminary, and the New School for Social Research.

Bp. Charles and his wife Joan first visited Sea Island on their honeymoon in 1967. They now reside here eight months of the year and spend summers in Leland, Michigan, where he serves as vicar of St. Peter’s Episcopal Summer Chapel. They have two daughters, their husbands, and six grandchildren, who are the center of their lives.
