Advent Study: Exploring Holy Disruption

As a special adult formation offering for Advent, there will be a three-week exploration of Holy Disruption: Discovering Advent in the Gospel of Mark by Tracy Daub. Mark’s Gospel, of course, does not contain a nativity story—no angels or shepherds or wisemen. So why would we look to Mark for Advent when we have Matthew and Luke? We might very well ask ourselves, “Where’s the baby?” Of course, the story of Advent and Christmas is more than just a story about a baby or shepherds or wisemen. In Mark, there is no carol-filled, sentimentalized view of Jesus, but rather a story of the explosive, disruptive, and transformative love of God for the world, revealed in every aspect of Jesus’ life.

With the book and the accompanying video series, we will explore the Markan themes of anticipating the coming of Christ, the Christian meaning of peace on earth, how God offers us a place of belonging, and what it means to have God with us.

We will meet in the Vestry Room on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 PM, beginning December 4. Copies of the book are available in the front office. If you would please let Father Bill know of your interest, he will be in touch with more information about the class and preparation for it.
